THE MONEY, CARS, AND THE CLOTHES, I SUPPOSE
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, whose the fairest of them all"? No, Im not Snow White, but seeing that I too get chills when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror I am now plagued with the same thing lil miss thang had, Vanity. Now, I had to have a conversation with God about this thing when brought to my attention, because those of you that know me know that I love to take pictures of myself, and look in the mirror at any given moment. But what God was trying to make me understand was what was the root of those actions, and please dont misunderstand, Im not saying that there is anything wrong with taking care of yourself or taking pride (not the bad kind) in the way that you look, Im talking about over-obsessing. In todays world , we have more of the modern day Snow White on our hands, women today (and men) are so wrapped up in themselves that they fail to really see, themselves. From the words of the most wisest king, Solomon, the scripture simply states: "All is vanity".( Ecclesiates 1:3) King Solomon, had everthing that a man could want, he was rich, handsome, powerful, and possesed and abundance of wives (1,000 to be exact), concubines and children. He had been warned not to go in unto them,(be intimate) because they would turn his heart away after their gods (1 Kings 11:1-13) Being hard headed (disobedient lol) he did not adhere to this counsel he loved them and layed with them and worshipped their gods with them, and his heart was turned away and was not perfect before God as the heart of David his father. See, thats where we mess up yall. We get to the point where things are good, needs met, everybody getting along, then all of a sudden we dont "feel" like going to church, or Im too busy to pray. We focus more on the life we living than on the one who gave us life. Its so easy to get into the flow of things and fall slack in our servitude toward God. He want us to realize whats most important in this short life he has given us. James 4:14 says that "our life is a vapor that appeareth for a little time then vanisheth away."
A famous singer quoted " I want the money the cars and the clothes, I suppose." But what he must come to understand is that you can't take any of those things with you, when you die, not even success. Only what you do for God will matter in the end. Yes, God wants us to live good prosperous lives, he promised to give us life more abundantly. He doesnt want these worldly and material goods be the reason we are who we are, it shouldn't change our character or draw us away from God. Vanity is known to be one of the seven deadly sins. Quite frankly, all sins are deadly according to Romans 6:23 the wages of sin is death. Webster defines vanity as valueless and empty, inflated in onesself and ones apperance, a fashionable unimportance. The word unimportant really stuck out to me, because there was a time that I was so afraid of loosing everything. I had built a reliance on material things and when I lacked them I was never happy. What I possesed drove me to try to be more successful so that I could have the best of the best, still sidetracked, still distracted by taking pictures, when I fell to see the BIG picture. Where was God in my life and how important was serving him? How much time had I devoted in strengthening my realtionship with him, reading my bible, praying, encouraging my brother or sister, fasting, crying out and seeking his face. And how much time had I devoted to work, shopping, applying makeup, finding the perfect dress or pair of shoes, being mad at somebody, going on a date, eating, eating, and eating some more (smh). My life was full of vanity. Vain thoughts and imaginations, the bible says to cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity, every thought to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
We are going to be held accountable and judged for every word, every thought, action and work (whether good or bad). God is going to want to simply know, WHY? What was the motive behind our actions, or the thoughts behind out words? Where we trying to fit in? Be funny? Hurt someones feelings or get somebody told? Did we love out of a pure heart? Did we give and expect nothing in return? We have to constantly be aware of our position in thinking. We cant be carnal minded, but transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2) God gives us the things he wants us thinking about and focused on in Philippians 4:8, it says " Finally, bretheren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever thinga are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. He dont want our heads in the clouds, or so focused on this short life that we can pull away and tap into the supernatural realm to recieve instruction as to what we are called here to do for him. We are to be ready minded people of God, always having a ear to hear what the spirit is saying (Matthew 11:15) Keeping our hearts and minds guarded ( Philippians 4:7). So whats been on your mind lately, hopefully not the money, the cars, and the clothes........
