The need to feed!
I have found through much, much experience that in order to grow you must eat the proper nutrients your body needs. This is also true for your spiritual body. We must constantly feed our spirits the word of God in order for us to stay strong in the faith. I have found this out the hard way. I read and digest and feel empowered, and think I am OK, and I can make it a couple of days without reading or I just get busy and say I'll read and don't, or I will start reading and get distracted or pre-occupied. One of these instances occurred with me just this last week, I was on vacation with my sister, an as we busied ourselves everyday, I looked at my bible, even told her I was about to read it and never did. Over the course of the getaway I found my strength depleted. Not physically, but spiritually and surprisingly emotionally, and I say emotionally because I think when you read your word you have more control over your emotions and the way you think, feel, and react to life. John 6:63 says" My words are spirit and they are Life". In order to keep your spirit from a spiritual decline you must feed it daily. We must renew our minds with the word and keep our thoughts in check. I understand that it can be really hard to fit in that quiet time or break away from our busy schedules to read the word especially if you don't like to read or if you feel the bible is hard to understand. Lucky for you, lol there are plenty of study bibles and various tools that break the word down for you to better understand.
We must go through the different stages of growth as a Christian. When we first get saved that is the baby stage, we are hungry for the Word and on fire about the things of God, yet we lack the knowledge of God and we are still immature in our walks. Some people are saved 20 years and are still at this stage. The reason being is they have not taken the time to engulf themselves in the Word, learn more about God and be strengthened in the faith. We go to church to be fed, but we must make it a habit to feast on the meat of the word at home. God wants to revelate to us personally, not only through our Pastors and teachers, and leaders. He will come to you himself and speak to you and give you understanding. James 1:5 says " If any man lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not." James 4:8 says "....draw nigh to God and he will draw nigh to you. The next stage of growth is childhood. 1 Corinthians 13:11 says "when I was a child I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child, but when I became a man I put away childish things. " At this stage, we now have a relationship with Christ, and we are learning more of him. We have the foundational milk of the word and now we began to exercise it more frequently. Just as important as feeding is to the body for growth, exercising is essential. We must exercise our faith, and what we have been taught through the word of God. I find myself seldomly going through some of the same stuff I would have just read about. Take for example, I had been studying humility and the pride of life, and God took me through a series of purging and repenting. Putting me in different instances where I had to show myself humble and take the low road, where it wasn't important that I was right, or even if I had been done wrong to act like it wasn't and to love that person. I had to exercise everything that I had been reading and studying, and while going through this, the Holy Ghost would bring back to my remembrance the scriptures and revelation he had brought me back to mind. I would find myself checking myself so that I wouldn't misstep because I really wanted to get it. Though I am not perfected in my exercising I must continue to do it, just like at the gym, we may not have the perfect form when we began a regime, but the more we do it the easier it becomes and we are strengthened and sometimes we don't even know it until we have to use it.
There is a consistent need to fill our spirits with the word. Our spiritual diet must consist of things that nuture us and molds us into the vessels God requires us to be. The New Testament is a good place to feed from, as it is the New Covenant. We are not subject to the old covenant of the old testament, even though I love to read it and learn more about who God really is, I make sure i feed off the new testament because it was written to the church. Whether by one of the disciples or by Jesus himself. Paul said this mystery is now made manifest (Romans 16:25-26) meaning it is for now. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says " All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction, in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. Here in this scripture we see the need and the benefits of reading the Word of God. Its for our good that we constantly read our word and maintain a constant relationship with God. It is through his word that we find the answers to the issues of life, comfort, and joy. Whatever you feed your spirit is what you are going to be filled with. So ask yourself, what have you been eating lately??hummmmm
